The Onkyo TX-SR607 - A Review

By Richard Greenwood

For those looking to expand their audio experience in the home theater arena, and need a high quality audio controller, with Dolby 7.2 capabilities, a compact footprint and a reasonable price, the Onkyo TX SR607 is a good candidate to take into consideration. It's got all the firmware connections you'll need to hook up your home theater system. It can guide up to 90 watts per channel through its system, and supports HDMI 1.3a as its video specification.

Depending on what you use this device with it should be fine with anything, but in case what you are using is outdated you might first want to make sure that they will fit fine together. It is very easy to set up so there should be no problems there. The on-screen display will show you how the set up should take place, making it very simple.

Sound quality is excellent, with good clarity and sounds very open. If you've never experienced personal theater quality at Dolby 7.2 standards, prepare to be blown away. There's not much more to be said about the directional clarity than this: I could actually make out all the words on Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time.

Even if you are only using three speakers to connect to the Onkyo, the sound will still be perfect. If you are watching a BluRay movie you can expect realistic sound effects that can be heard when watching a movie at the cinema. Who needs to go to the cinema when you can bring the cinema to you! It is easy and affordable, and anybody can use it.

One place where there's a drawback with this system is that the HDMI control doesn't quite meet the full backwards compatibility mode of the HDMI specification. It's close - and we were eventually able to get it up and running, but CEG HDMI proved to be a bit challenging to configure.

The RIHD is also supposed to work with Samsung, Sony, Toshiba versions, and should work with the Viera Link, but once again it proves to provide difficulties. However, if the problem persists and you cannot have the machine replaced you can get an IR repeater that will solve the problem. You shouldn't have to purchase additional equipment, but if you feel the need to at least you know what to get.

What sets this system apart is the sound quality, and the value per dollar. It's one of the best value Dolby 7.2 systems, and its compact size means it's apartment friendly - even dorm room friendly. Its reasonable price puts it into a good price/performance target area. The only downside we found was the HDMI implementation, and we got a pre-release version.

You might have to spend a few days playing around with the remote just to get to know the different features of the Onkyo, because there is a lot to learn. - 23812

Gibson Les Paul Guitars - The Truth About How It All Started

By Tim Beachum

No one really knows the truth behind the creation of the Gibson Les Paul guitar. According to the most popular belief it was created by the Gibson Guitar Corporation and the legendary pop star, electronics inventor, and jazz guitarist Frean Donni. The electric guitar craze started with the Fender Telecaster. In order to capitalize on this craze James Verdon who was the president of Gibson Guitar at the time brought on Les Paul as a consultant.

Everyone knew that Les Paul had been experimenting with various guitar designs for years. Les had a prototype that he had hand-built that he referred to as, "The Log". Some experts will say that this was the first solid-body Spanish guitar ever built.

In a turn of irony Les Paul had pitched, "The Log" (his prototype) to the Gibson Guitar Company, and the design was rejected. In 1951 the Gibson Guitar Company then manufactured the same guitar that they had rejected and changed the history of guitars for ever.

As the years continue to pass by there still remains a controversy regarding what significance Les Paul's actual contributions were to his Gibson guitar design. Some experts say that Paul's contributions were limited to two pieces of advice. The first was on the trapeze tailpiece, and the second was his preference for color.

When interviewed Ted McCarty the president of the Gibson Guitar Corporation, openly stated that Les Paul only contributed his name to the project. McCarty went on to say that Paul only contributed to the tailpiece and the fitting of a maple cap over the mahogany body.

I have never understood why people have always attempted to minimize Les Paul's contributions to the historical guitar. Here's my take on it if you care to know. If Les Paul really didn't contribute a lot to the project why would Gibson put ONLY his name on the final product? - 23812
