The Misconceptions Of Anime Fans

By Anna Tsuchiya

Anime has had many a reputation. One of them that has stuck for a long time and is always associated with the genre is that it is something that only nerds are involved in. Even with evidence to the contrary, people who watch anime are always considered nerdish in every way.

That said, is there any truth to such beliefs? Anime fans would definitely protect their reputation and say that they have been much maligned. The general public laugh and ridicule them for their passion in this way, but it is probable that their prejudices are unfounded.

Firstly, anime is no different from movies, books, television programs or even music. They are all basically for entertainment. Unfortunately, anime is also considered to be nothing more than cartoons, something that childrens love. Yet, we need to look beyond this, at the fact that anime plots do feature more grown up concerns.

Next, people who love anime are no different from those who enjoy getting their thrills from action movies. The latter exhibit the same passion when discussing their favorite movies or action sequences. However, they are never considered to be 'nerdy' in behavior.

As mentioned, there are various sub-genres within the anime world. They include science fiction, thrillers, action, war, fantasy, romance and many more. Such subjects are handled in other media as well from books to movies.

Many also associate nerds with behavior that hints of being someone who has hardly been exposed to the practical world of ours. For those who have had experience interacting and dealing with people working in the anime industry, most of them do not exhibit traits of such form.

Nobody can prevent anybody from having an opinion of their own, even if it is that of anime fans being nerds. It generally speaks of narrow-mindedness and is more common than one thinks. President Obama spent a large part of his career as a professor, but did that mean that he was a nerd who spent most of his time with books?

To the credit of anime fans, they generally ignore such misconceptions. They are passionate about their art and are always willing to share what they enjoy with others. Finding happiness and joy in what they do is ultimately more important than trying to change people's opinions. - 23812
