Cosplay - Fantasy Becomes Reality When Cosplay Meets Anime!

By Ben Pate

Over the past two decades anime has become increasingly popular and along with it anime conventions have begun to draw massive crowds. Born from these huge gatherings of fanatical anime fans was the hobby of creating anime costumes to imitate characters from various anime series. Derived from a combination of the English words "costume" and "play" this beloved hobby is known as "Cosplay Characters".

In the recent years, largely from 1998 and beyond the amount of public acceptance of Manga Cosplay has increased. Today cosplay is a popular scene in public settings such as parties, nightclubs and video game shows. In some parts of Japan such as the Akihabara district there are even cosplay cafes.

One of the biggest parts of the cosplay hobby is the creation of the character costume itself. The more intricate and accurate the details of the costume are the better the cosplay is considered. To this end even a person's hair, skin and physical features may become part of the overall cosplay costume. Many anime events even hold contests where cosplay costumes are judged for accuracy and creativity.

Japanese Cosplay requires a myriad of craft skills to perfect. From metal to leather to simple linens the materials needed are varied. Getting the most precise and accurate costumes requires a wide range of creative talents and skills to truly depict the unique and often elaborate costumes worn in anime.

Cosplay costume trends are always changing. On a yearly and monthly basis, depending on what anime, movies and video games are currently popular, the characters of cosplay change. In the past years even some non-anime characters have become popular cosplay choices. Harry Potter and Star Wars are common choices for non-anime character costumes.

Evolving from within the hobby of cosplay itself are some subset groups of enthusiasts who have taken cosplay in new directions. Crossplay for example is a type of cosplay where the players themselves dress up as characters of the opposite sex. However since anime tends to feature characters wearing a variety of unique and not necessarily gender-specific clothing, this is not seen as all that odd.

As it stands now, cosplay has grown so much that at their monthly and yearly conventions thousands of pictures are taken. Taken by "cameko" or "camera boy" photographers, these pictures often end up one of the hundreds of dedicated cosplay community sites online or in one of the cosplay magazines around the world. - 23812
