Features And Advantages Of Ergonomic Office Furniture Design

By Philip Barker

The office interior is not complete without office furniture, and the latter must be in tune with the overall office design. The office furniture should also follow the rules of ergonomics so as to make sure that employees can go on making use of them for extended durations without any health risks.

More than one third of an ordinary employee's day is spent in the office, and if the office furniture results in his discomfort and body ache, then it may pose serious danger to his health. Therefore it is important that office furniture, particularly the office chairs used by employees, must be ergonomically designed.

Any buy of office chairs must be made only after ensuring a few things. As an employer, you must choose only those office chairs that are stable and can be moved without much effort, besides making sure that they can be adjusted according to the need of the user. Employees must be able to comfortably place their hands on the arm rests and be able to adjust the seat height according to their convenience. The chair must permit comfortable movement of hands and legs such that the employee can execute his tasks without any hindrances. The back support is the most crucial element of an office chair. It must offer sufficient comfort to the occupant and create no stress to his or her spine, and it needs to be optimally padded and reclined for this purpose.

The second most crucial component of office furniture is office desks. Desks should be of an ideal height and must have enough space on top to allow employees to perform both computer and writing jobs with ease. Small or crowded office desks are a real problem for the employee and his body also has to make some avoidable adjustments during work that expose him to grave health hazards at a later stage.

Office ergonomics is incomplete without cautious planning of the placement of office furniture. For example, there should be sufficient alley area between workstations to enable unhindered man and material movement, such that it does not cause any disturbance to an employee sitting at a workstation.

Ergonomic office furniture not only ensures good health of the employees, but also raises their effectiveness and productivity at work. An ergonomic office allows a worker to properly organise and manage his work and also creates a pleasant and stress free environment.

Office design must always be such that the physical discomfort is ideally zero or at least reduced substantially for the workers. The office interior should target at creating ideal working conditions for staff, decreasing health hazards and increasing their productivity, thereby ensuring the growth of the company. - 23812
