7 Points on How to Run an Outdoor Movie Fundraising Event

By James Rodger

Movies under the stars are great for any group who are looking to fundraise for their cause. Whether it be for a charity, school or church, outdoor movie nights make fundraising not only easy but fun for both the organiser and guest.

To guarantee your next outdoor movie fundraising event is a success there are some crucial steps that you should consider.

1. Evaluate the amount of funds you need to raise. By having a net total in mind you will know how big your event will need to be, e.g. the number of people who need to be invited, size of the area were the event will be located, and size of the inflatable screen and the type of sound system required. By establishing this total to begin with it will help with every other aspect of the night.

2. Search out a location. Finding a location with a large space, soft grass and is safe for patrons is crucial. Once you have picked your spot you need to seek approval to use the area. This approval will need to be obtained in writing.

3. Locate an outdoor events company who work with community groups. With a quick search on google you will be able to find a group who will not only provide all the equipment required for your event but also good advice. Most good companies will have a fundraising kit which will provide further information.

4. Choose a Movie! Choosing the right film for your movie night is quite important so take some time and consider who will be attending (e.g. age). There are a few good websites which can provide some advice but the best is imdb online which provides both ideas and reviews.

5. Contact the distributor and obtain approval to play the movie. This is an important step as it is a legal requirement to seek approval to show a film in a public setting. The Outdoor event company should be able to assist with this requirement.

6. Promotion, promotion promotion. You must ensure you give your event every chance to raise as much money as possible. Think of creative ways that you can promote your event; email, websites, blogs, media releases, banners and posters are all important. Out of all these options usually the ideal option that will have the largest impact will be your local paper particularly if you can obtain free editorial space.

7. Make sure on the night that there are lots of opportunities for people to support the fundraising efforts. This could include; collection buckets on arrival (or sell tickets to the event), sponsors, raffle, selling food at the vent and a silent auction. Try not to over ask the audience for money but at the same time they have come along to support so don't miss an opportunity. - 23812
