Most Metallica fans look forward to each new release, as they've been successful with just a couple of negatives. The majority of releases have been applauded, the last release, St. Anger, was not so successful. This was due to the band trying some new ways of making music which caused a little directional problem. The fans weren't pleased but it wasn't a bad album. They were experimenting for themselves which isn't a bad thing for musicians to try on occasion.
So there was great anticipation for this next album, Death Magnetic. This seems to be a sound more similar to the distant past, the heavy metal sound, and with good songs. This doesn't mean that they lead the heavy metal sound but their impact has not diminished much, and this album is testament to their ability to be relevant.
The heavy metal scene has changed since the late eighties and early nineties and the band was more of a hard rock band through the nineties. I would not put them in the same category as new metal and even the heavy metal of the newest bands. I would say that there are some good songs on this album that could fit in with any of their back catalog. There are four or five songs that would have fit on any of the past albums and are as good as anything else out there.
Unfortunately, Metallica will probably never reach the height of their first four releases, however, there are a lot of really good groups out there that fall in the same category. Most of the Rolling Stone hits were in the seventies. Their music since then has still been good but it's just not what it was then.
There are only a couple of bands that can keep putting out hit after hit until the band breaks up, but most bands don't stick together into their forties and fifties and still stay relevant. You have to admire a band that can still be relevant and popular after so long. Metallica is in a class that very few bands other than the Stones, Aerosmith and a select few others have reached. - 23812
