New Release Proves Guns N Roses Is Back To Stay

By Patrick Daniels

I will agree with the naysayers, the new Guns N Roses album does not necessarily sound like the older music. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. I dont think that it was supposed to sound like the old stuff.

The older music, especially Appetite for Destruction, the first G n R album was about as perfect a debut album that could have been made. It was an almost perfect mix of glam rock mixed with some punk influence and a healthy helping of I dont give a crap attitude. It was loud, brash and arrogant in it presentation and in its excess. In a word-perfect. It didnt get any better than Appetite.

The release of the two successive Illusion albums continued with the sound but with a little refinement. With success under their belts, they were able to branch out artistically, and naturally the hard core fans felt they had gone soft - a little too arty. But time has vindicated them and the albums generally stand up well. Now after a 15 year delay, we get some new candy finally. It is definitely a new sound, but an updated version of what we have come to expect from them.

On this recording, the only returning member of the original band is Axl. And that's just as well, because he'd likely have made them crazy. Though the cover says Guns N Roses, this is absolutely all about Axl Rose. In fact, he may have done himself a disservice by not putting his own name on the masthead instead of that of the band. An Axl Rose album with fresh sounds would likely have been received better than an updated rehashing of what some purists believe is the signature sound.

The first two songs blast us into a frenzy and remind us why we spent our money on it in the first place. The title track Chinese Democracy has been performed dozens of times through the years, but never has been released until now. At the least, this new effort by Axl and Company has been able to open us to new possibilities while reminding us of the reasons why we like them in the first place. - 23812
