The United States is amongst the biggest producer of movies in the world, along with India and China. It is a country that relies heavily on the industry and is considered to be the leader of film production.
The film industry in the United States consisting of film production companies, film studios, film festivals, movie stars, directors and other film personnel are mostly based in California. Together they are part of what is known throughout the world as Hollywood.
Hollywood is considered by many to be the movie centre of the entire world and is often portrayed as the glamour and spectacle of the movie industry. It is based primarily in the north-west area in Downtown Los Angeles, and is also where most of the movie stars and celebrities reside.
Hollywood started off when D.W. Griffith first came to the area in 1910 with a film crew to shoot some footage of the area. Before long they had adopted a vacant lot in the downtown area of Los Angeles. Then they began exploring the areas around Los Angeles and found that the area was very quick to adapt to their needs. The temperate weather and endless hours of sunshine were a great incentive to shoot there also.
After shooting the movie ?Old California?, which is widely regarded as the very first movie shot there, the film company decided to stay on in the area and produce more movies from there.
In 1913, many more moviemakers started heading into California to take advantage of the ideal filming conditions the area had to offer. It was at this time that the Hollywood film industry began and is regarded as its birth.
Nestor Studios, founded in 1911, was the first movie studio in Hollywood, with the first feature film called The Squaw Man being produced around that time. Many more film studios began to quickly move into the area and expand around the Los Angeles area. Gradually Hollywood came to be so associated with the film industry so strongly that this term began to be used as a synonym for the entire movie industry.
It was during the First World War that Hollywood became the movie capital of the entire world. By 1950, music studios and offices had also began moving to Hollywood. By this time much of the movie industry had already been relocated there.
A huge sign that read ?Hollywoodland? was constructed on the hills around the area in 1923. Originally intended as an advertisement for housing developments in the area, it was soon left abandoned and allowed to rot away. It wasn?t until 1949 that the sign was repaired and moved to Mount Lee, where the last part of the sign was removed leaving ?Hollywood?.
Hollywood is now seen through the world as the centre of the movie industry. All eyes turn to Hollywood for it?s stars, big blockbuster movies, and particularly high profile events like the Oscars. - 23812
